Jeff Dike is the creator and maintainer of User Mode Linux (UML) - a virtual machine which runs on Linux. In recent times, UML has gained a lot of significance after Linus Torvalds incorporated the UML patch into the official Linux kernel source tree.

With a stream of Linux based desktop alternatives flooding the market, the battle against software giant Microsoft has reached higher ground. The latest entrant, a company called Everyone's Linux (ELX), is all set to launch its product range in India, with a radically different mantra - "If you cant beat them with innovation, ape them." Interestingly, the Hyderabad based company has recently appointed ex-SCO employee Manojit Majumdar to spearhead its sales effort in the country.

The NetBSD Project announced Monday that release 1.6.2 of the NetBSD operating system is now available, with binary distributions for 40 architectures. Newsforge interviewed Luke Mewburn of the NetBSD Core Group and asked him about the NetBSD project in general, the long awaiting release 2.0, and a lot of technical and organizational issues.

"Originally I was going to support KDE and GNOME, I didn't have an opinion one way or another and I thought it would be a good idea. However after looking at the state of both projects, how they were built and where they were headed, KDE just made a lot more sense. The infrastructure was very intelligently designed and allowed us to be extremely productive."

"Everything we do with GnuCash is aimed at making it competitive (ultimately, superior) to Quicken and other products. We want our program to be people's choice because it's the best available, not just because it's free (in both senses). Quicken is still ahead of GnuCash in many areas, and as you point out, sometimes closed-source companies have big advantages."

"The economics of the Red Hat Database quite simply make a lot of sense. We offer a very low total cost of ownership, an open source GPL and a subscription model that makes the price package very reasonable indeed. We estimate that we will coming in at around 25% of the cost of proprietary solution and that gives organisations a very attractive, cost effective, route into open source."

"When Linux started off, it was for technical people, and it wasn't even just for technical people, it was for the technologists of the technologists. You would not have enjoyed using the system in '91 unless you were really passionate about computers and you really knew how they worked very low down, and you were willing to do a lot of work to actually install the system -- and do all the work, compile it for your machine."

A large part of talk revolves on the use of X on handhelds as opposed to framebuffers, why X isn't as bloated as many claim, and why a network-transparent foundation makes sense for the GUI's of tomorrow's handhelds.
