Linux : Reviews : SUSE Linux 10 - a.k.a. Mercedes Linux
By Posted: ( Sun 27th Nov 2005 02:17:32[AM] UTC )
Oct 2005 completed my first year as a SUSE Linux user. I had started out with SUSE 9.2 warily. Having been through a myriad of Linux distros in the last 5-6 years, I had reached a conclusion that Linux was fine to fiddle around with at home, but not for the regular work at office. I could not spare time for geeky software and “terminals” were a dead end!

Linux : Reviews : Polywell Poly Server Station 890
By Posted: ( Fri 17th Aug 2001 01:06:12[AM] UTC )
Almost limitless configurability and great performance make the Poly ServerStation 890T a serious workstation contender. Featuring dual 1.2GHz Athlon CPUs, 512MB of DDR SDRAM, and four 40GB hard drives, the system screamed through our benchmarks. Standard service and support, however, fall a bit short for the money.

Linux : Reviews : Gaim: The game for AOL Instant Messaging on Linux
By Posted: ( Sun 5th Aug 2001 09:50:50[PM] UTC )
Last time I had looked at Licq, a solution for your ICQ needs on Linux. I was supposed to follow up the next with a review of an AOL IM client. As you can see, I ended up taking a bit longer than a week! This week I take a look at a client that'll help you keep in touch with all your "Buddys" on AOL Instant Messenger. Like with ICQ, the only official version available is a Java client. Once again, the lack of an official native client is not much of a problem and there are several Linux clones for you to choose from. The one that I am taking a look at is Gaim, a feature rich, easy to use and lightweight client for AOL.

Linux : Reviews : Licq: A solution for your Linux ICQ needs
By Posted: ( Mon 25th Jun 2001 01:23:27[AM] UTC )
The Internet has always been a great communications network and has truly made the world a smaller place. With the passage of time, several utilities have come up which enhance the Internet making it a more productive communication medium. One such, relatively recent, utility is instant messaging. There are many instant messaging programs available. Today we will look at an ICQ client for Linux called Licq.

Linux : Reviews : Abracadabra! The magic of Mandrake 8.0
By Posted: ( Thu 21st Jun 2001 11:18:42[PM] UTC )
Those of you, who recall our previous review on Mandrake 7.2, may remember our main grouse - a buggy and inconsistent install procedure. Now whether that was due to software bugs or a bad download was never resolved. We also got tons of comments from our readers some of who experienced the same problems. We faithfully forwarded the comments to the Mandrake team hoping for some reaction. Well, there were none forthcoming, however if this new release is an indication, it appears they do take their customers seriously. Mandrake 8.0, the Traktopel version is all that a newcomer to Linux could ask for and more. Who says the Linux desktop is dead!

Linux : Reviews : SuSE 7.1 Professional: what 7.0 should have been...
By Posted: ( Thu 3rd May 2001 11:37:55[PM] UTC )
SuSE 7.1 finally reached FreeOS and boy, were we eagerly awaiting this new release! It has lots of new additions like kernel 2.4 (the first to support 2.4 final), XFree86 4.0.2 (with anti-aliasing support) and the new glibc 2.2. Although we did get it a little late, we went ahead and reviewed the package and here's our opinion.

Linux : Reviews : IglooFTP: More than just a cool name
By Posted: ( Thu 26th Apr 2001 12:21:47[AM] UTC )
File Transfer Protocol or FTP, as it is commonly referred to, is one of the most important protocols of the Internet. This protocol facilitates the easy transfer of files across the Internet. Typically, there are two components required to make this work-an FTP server at the sending computer and, an FTP client at the receiving computer. Here, we look at an FTP client for Linux, called IglooFTP.

Linux : Reviews : Pine: for email and Internet news
By Posted: ( Fri 23rd Mar 2001 01:15:26[AM] UTC )
GUI based mail clients do make life easy and are now available for Linux too, so why would anyone still want to use Pine - a text based, non-gui mail client, Well, Pine is fast, reliable, can handle tons of mail and is flexible too.

Linux : Reviews : Windows rules or goes Phat?
By Posted: ( Thu 8th Mar 2001 01:47:33[AM] UTC )
This distro of Linux is for all those who are desperate to try out Linux but are scared to make the jump. Check out Phat Linux – you can’t get any closer to Windows than this. It not only installs on your Windows partition but also starts up from there.

Linux : Reviews : Corel Word Perfect 2000
By Posted: ( Sun 4th Mar 2001 04:18:30[PM] UTC )
Office tools comprise the core of an average person's computer usage. One reason for sticking to Windows was the availability of an excellent office suite in form of MS Office 2000. Well, not any more. Word Perfect 2000 looks all set to demolish that reason.

Linux : Reviews : Book: The Cathedral and the Bazaar: Musings on Linux and Open Source by an Accidental Revolutionary
By Posted: ( Fri 19th Jan 2001 04:39:57[AM] UTC )
Eric Raymond, author of the popular Fetchmail utility, is one of the most dedicated Open Source advocates. In this book he looks at the development model of Linux, which overturned many of his pre-determined notions of how large and important software development projects should be handled. He compares the ``cathedral'' model of development followed by most of the commercial world with the ``bazaar'' model as followed by Linux developers. Also find some good insights into the future of software development in this book.

Linux : Reviews : Opera 4 beta 4 for Linux
By Posted: ( Mon 8th Jan 2001 04:40:36[AM] UTC )
Opera for Windows is a very lean and fast browser. A Linux version has also been released. This is still in beta and is about a version down on the Windows release, but you can tell that this is a very competent browser in the making.
