Linux : Reviews : A boy and his computer
Posted: ( Thu 26th Apr 2001 01:09:08[AM] UTC )
In "Just for Fun," Torvalds keeps the truly geeky side of himself in check, explaining the basics of what an operating system is in language clear enough to be aggravatingly simple-minded to any serious hacker. But for the general audience this book is an eminently readable account of Linus Torvalds' short life. Diamond and Torvalds have done a good job of making both the person and the program comprehensible to all.

Linux : Reviews : Linux-Mandrake 7.2 -- Powerpack deluxe part 1: The install
Posted: ( Mon 23rd Apr 2001 02:01:17[AM] UTC )
"Mandrake was painless, and the graphical install, which other distributions seem to have trouble with, worked flawlessly. Not once was I left wondering if the system had hung. It's cleanly laid out and enjoyable to use, and most of all reliable. I would rank the Mandrake install next to Stormix for ease of use and simplicity," says Steve Coe as he discusses how he replaced Red Hat Linux with Linux-Mandrake.

Linux : Reviews : Zeus 3.3.8: A powerful serve
Posted: ( Mon 23rd Apr 2001 01:12:27[AM] UTC )
Zeus 3.3.8 proved to be a very flexible and highly configurable Web server--one with the scalability and power to run the busiest, most demanding Web sites. It has added support for the Macintosh OS X operating system, making it one of the first enterprise applications to provide a version for the newly enterprise-ready Mac OS.

Linux : Reviews : Updated Samba one less reason for buying Windows
Posted: ( Wed 18th Apr 2001 11:39:01[PM] UTC )
As before, it continues to enhance its appeal as a replacement Windows authentication server. Samba makes Microsoft Client Access Licenses - mandatory for printing and basic file sharing in a Microsoft environment - effectively redundant. Which at $50 a pop, makes for a potentially huge saving.

Linux : Reviews : Sony VAIO PCG-C1VN PictureBook reviewed
Posted: ( Wed 18th Apr 2001 11:01:29[PM] UTC )
Phil Hughes reviews the Sony VAIO PCG-C1VN PictureBook running Red Hat Linux. He puts the laptop through its paces during a trip to Costa Rica and reports that the PictureBook is a real winner, but it pales in comparison to his five-year-old Toshiba T3600.

Linux : Reviews : gnotebook: Midnight travels with Progeny
Posted: ( Mon 16th Apr 2001 12:40:04[AM] UTC )
"I'm saving a real review of Progeny for a few weeks from now, when the company releases the shrinkwrap version of the distro, but this is a bit of a pocket review from a GNOME fan's point of view because there are a couple of things that make the Progeny option pretty attractive", says Michael Hall.

Linux : Reviews : A tale from the Linux frontier
Posted: ( Thu 12th Apr 2001 10:06:16[PM] UTC )
"Embedded Systems Conference was a geeks dream. Every type of hardware periphrial, chip, compiler, etc vendor was here showing off wares to an embedded crowd. I was a little disappointed by the number of linux based demos. I had expected to see more. I did see a lot of demos based on Embedded Planet hardware, they definitly had the largest presence for a powerpc hardware vendor."

Linux : Reviews : Rune preview
Posted: ( Thu 12th Apr 2001 01:41:26[AM] UTC )
"All in all, this game has left me with a good impression. I think Human Head did a great job with this game, and so did Loki by porting it to Linux. The story is rich and inviting. The graphics are very stunning and highly detailed. Its a great piece of software. Do get this game when it finally is released, because it will be well worth your money."

Linux : Reviews : Linus Torvalds tells his story
Posted: ( Wed 11th Apr 2001 12:50:00[AM] UTC )
Linus Torvalds' autobiography, `Just for Fun, The Story of an Accidental Revolutionary', gives an insight into the life of the man who as much by accident as by design has been hailed as the embodiment of the open source revolution. The book is neither technical nor only about Linus Torvalds. It is about the Linux operating system and, more important still, the issues surrounding it. It is the story of a collaborative effort. A must read.

Linux : Reviews : The startX files: When the mouse is an anathema
Posted: ( Tue 10th Apr 2001 08:28:53[PM] UTC )
"Spring COMDEX this year was a complete waste of time. So what did I do instead of go to COMDEX? I ended up working on my Linux box, lovingly crafting it to my needs, and playing with a window manager unlike any other I had ever seen: Ratpoison. It is an incredibly simple window manager that does the least possible with X. As the name implies, there is no mouse support."

Linux : Reviews : Top 50 things to know to pass the Sair Exam 102
Posted: ( Mon 9th Apr 2001 10:58:14[PM] UTC )
Exam 102 (System Administration,) is one of the four Sair exams you must pass to become a Linux Certified Administrator (LCA). Passing Exam 102 will earn you the designation of Linux Certified Professional (LCP). Emmett Dulaney takes a detailed look at the exam.

Linux : Reviews : Double the reviews, double the fun
Posted: ( Sat 7th Apr 2001 10:36:32[PM] UTC )
Evil3D reviews WinLinux 2000, a FAT based distro with a Windows based config tool. Also reviewed is KRUD, which is a subscription style distro."Ah KRUD. No, that is not some poor slang from '50s TV or an expression of exasperation. KRUD is the acronym for Kevin Red Hat Uber Distribution.

Linux : Reviews : KRUD reviewed
Posted: ( Tue 3rd Apr 2001 09:25:07[PM] UTC )
For IT professionals who do Red Hat installations on a very regular basis, KRUD is a good fit. Home users with very slow internet connections or none at all can also benefit from the extra utilities and security KRUD provides. If you have a high speed access, KRUD is probably not for you.

Linux : Reviews : WinLinux 2000 review
Posted: ( Tue 3rd Apr 2001 01:57:40[AM] UTC )
"Overall, I see WinLinux 2000 as a distribution based on a great idea. Give the Windows user the look and feel of Linux without a full commitment, and let them decide. The implementation however is still rough around the edges. Perhaps the next edition will fix several problems."

Linux : Reviews : Agenda VR3 developer edition preview
Posted: ( Sun 1st Apr 2001 11:29:10[PM] UTC )
"The Agenda is very well designed, and a joy to use. It is great fun to have a handheld running the same OS as my desktop. It really is Linux. There is a complete set of GNU like tools. By default, the standard distribution runs a very small footprint shell, ash. But Bash 2 is installed and you can easily configure it to be your default shell."
