Linux : Reviews : Dressed to thrill
Posted: ( Mon 12th Feb 2001 07:51:00[PM] UTC )
"Do you want to look good?I mean Ricky Martin- or Jennifer Lopez-good?to your enterprise customers? Then try on Linux 2.4, the new look of enterprise operating systems. You not only have a great Web server and departmental file server, you also have a server capable of enterprise services from massive database engines to enterprise wide file serving."

Linux : Reviews : AbriaSoft's "Abria SQL Standard"
Posted: ( Sun 11th Feb 2001 11:54:44[PM] UTC )
"I recently took the Abria SQL Standard product out for a test drive. I admit to having looked only at the Linux version; consequently, I will make no assumptions on the Windows version of the product. Are you sitting comfortably? Then, let's begin."

Linux : Reviews : Book roundup
Posted: ( Sat 10th Feb 2001 07:02:30[PM] UTC )
"The main point is that to really learn to use Linux without running up huge support calls, or pissing everyone off in IRC chat, you need to buy a book. So we have, for the last three months, been reading and researching away, beaver-like. But we were new to Linux when we started, and now our three strong team is at least half-proficient in the use of Linux"

Linux : Reviews : Which programming language?
Posted: ( Thu 8th Feb 2001 08:13:38[PM] UTC )
In this article, the popular programming languages, C, C++, Java, Python and Perl are compared. Personal opinions are used when appropriate. Also looked at are the development tools available for each language.

Linux : Reviews : Serious backup: Exabyte M2 and Tandberg SLR 60
Posted: ( Wed 7th Feb 2001 08:51:32[AM] UTC )
"Both drives seem to work flawlessly under Linux, and both companies will stand behind you if you want to use these drives under your favorite OS. So you'll have to make your purchasing decision based on something else -- like the number of Ben Franklins in your wallet or the number of GB that you need to store."

Linux : Reviews : Linux distribution roundup
Posted: ( Tue 6th Feb 2001 04:40:07[PM] UTC )
"All of the distributions covered here were installed from ISO images I bought from CheapBytes, with the exception of TurboLinux 6.1, which I downloaded and burned my own CD, and SuSE Linux, which I had the full package here, courtesy of SuSE. Most of the distributions offer various configurations of either desktop, developer, or server versions, with prices varying depending on the package you choose."

Linux : Reviews : Linux 2.4 vs. FreeBSD 4.1.
Posted: ( Tue 6th Feb 2001 07:34:13[AM] UTC )
"Now that the new Linux 2.4.0 kernel is out with a re-written TCP/IP stack, enhanced VM, and greatly improved IRQ handlers (and many other features), I thought I would take both the latest Linux and FreeBSD versions for a ride and compare the results."

Linux : Reviews : SuSE Linux 7.0 Professional
Posted: ( Mon 5th Feb 2001 02:04:31[AM] UTC )
"When installing, you have choices that allow you to build a system that suits your requirements. Choices such as XFree86 3.3.6 or XFree86 4.0; KDE 1.1.2 or KDE 2 beta allow you to be conserative or cutting-edge. Either way you get a system that reflects your needs."

Linux : Reviews : Photo-Paint won't disappoint
Posted: ( Mon 5th Feb 2001 12:37:21[AM] UTC )
Well, if you're in need of an easy- to-use photo-editing package, Corel's Photo-Paint 9 for Linux is worthy of serious consideration. It is especially well-suited for users who are already familiar with the Corel Draw Graphics Suite on Windows platforms.

Linux : Reviews : Preview of dual-processor DDR Athlon Linux performance
Posted: ( Thu 1st Feb 2001 09:06:36[PM] UTC )
For years, dual processor x86 systems have only been possible with Intel CPUs, and for the most part on Intel chipsets. AMD has come up with an answer to this, its 760MP chipset. A dual Athlon system with DDR memory on a prerelease 760MP board manufactured by Tyan, is previewed and initial impressions are very positive.

Linux : Reviews : T is for twm and tracking originality
Posted: ( Tue 23rd Jan 2001 05:52:55[PM] UTC )
With no less than six different progeny, clearly twm has played a significant role in the early development of window managers for X. And while it has fallen out of popular favor amongst competition such as Sawfish and Enlightenment, certainly this is not a window manager that should be forgotten.

Linux : Reviews : Kernel shoot-out: 2.2 Vs. 2.4
Posted: ( Tue 23rd Jan 2001 05:38:01[PM] UTC )
This is the first release of Linux that is said to truly stack up against Windows as far as speed and compatibility go. Everyone who is ready to jump on the bandwagon should pause for a second and ask -- how well does it perform? Will my hardware be compatible? Will 2.4 break features I enjoyed so much in 2.2?

Linux : Reviews : Making Linux work in the workplace: KWord
Posted: ( Tue 23rd Jan 2001 05:18:36[PM] UTC )
"People, in general, like what feels familiar, and will resist any attempts to deviate from that. As such, KWord's layout makes sense. It has a very Microsoft Office look and feel. Any user crossing over from the MS world could easily pick up and go with little effort. The icons are clear, conventionally laid out, and consistent."

Linux : Reviews : Matrox G400/G450
Posted: ( Mon 22nd Jan 2001 08:18:59[PM] UTC )
Don't expect a speed demon when it comes to Matrox cards. However, I have seen some performance gains over other cards in some games. Tests of Quake III give an average frames per second (fps) of 45. Tests in Descent 3 give an average fps of 35 indoors and 12 outdoors. Where these particular cards excel is not in games, but in the business and development group of users.

Linux : Reviews : Mandrake 7.2
Posted: ( Sun 21st Jan 2001 08:17:40[AM] UTC )
Mandrake's latest release of its popular, user friendly Linux distribution is the most up-to-date default install on the market at present. It includes version 2.0 (beta) of the K Desktop Environment (KDE) and version 1.2 of Gnome. Mandrake also gives you a choice of installing the latest 2.2 kernel or the 2.4 beta.
