Posted: ( Mon 31st May 2004 05:19:58[PM] UTC )
With a stream of Linux based desktop alternatives flooding the market, the battle against software giant Microsoft has reached higher ground. The latest entrant, a company called Everyone's Linux (ELX), is all set to launch its product range in India, with a radically different mantra - "If you cant beat them with innovation, ape them." Interestingly, the Hyderabad based company has recently appointed ex-SCO employee Manojit Majumdar to spearhead its sales effort in the country.

Linux : Opinions : Red Hat: Open source GFS
Posted: ( Fri 30th Apr 2004 07:17:58[AM] UTC )
Global File System (GFS) is a cluster file-system for operating system distributions based on the Linux kernel. It is used as a shared file-system commonly on share-accessible block storage such as fibre-channel, shared SCSI, iSCSI and FireWire (IEEE 1394) devices. Logical Volume Manager (LVM) is a Linux kernel component and a set of user-land utilities which allow a system-administrator to group physical block storage devices into logical storage pools and create logical block-storage volumes out of them which are more wieldable and manageable and provide some useful features over the partition approach.

Posted: ( Wed 21st Apr 2004 04:56:07[PM] UTC )
If you're still lumbering along with the antique Linux Loader LILO, you really ought to consider migrating to GRUB, the Grand Unified Bootloader. LILO is quite good, and, as the saying goes, if it ain't broke .... But GRUB has some advantages that make it, in my opinion, the Bootloader of today's generation. Here's why.

I came across Microsoft OpenOffice 1.1 Competitive Guide through a post on the TTLUG mailing list, and decided to answer it fully in a FDLed response because it will save quite a few people from typing everything.

Linux : Articles : Ten Things Small Businesses Need To Know About Linux
Posted: ( Thu 26th Feb 2004 05:46:51[PM] UTC )
Not so long ago, Linux was only for the technically adept. Then large enterprises claimed it as their own — only they possessed internal resources aplenty to confront its complexity. These days, however, more and more small- and mid-sized businesses are moving to the fastest-growing Operating System (OS) for good, solid reasons — and they aren't looking back.

Linux : Opinions : What did SCO buy--Unix or the Brooklyn Bridge?
Posted: ( Thu 26th Feb 2004 05:46:21[PM] UTC )
To the outsider, and even to me for some time, the various lawsuits involving the SCO Group follow a relatively simple story line. I'm not a lawyer, but after many interviews with the involved parties and lawyers, the case boils down to divergent interpretations of the subject matter.

In a recent article over at PCMag.com John Dvorak said: "Although nobody has been able to smuggle out a single screenshot of the top-secret IBM Linux desktop OS often referred to as Blue Linux I have friends who have seen it. I am assured that it not only exists, but is being used by large numbers of IBMers. 'They are going through a process of eating their own dog food right now,' I was told."
