Linux : Articles : Decentralise Linux security with Sudo
Posted: ( Tue 19th Feb 2002 07:16:58[AM] UTC )
Although some of us administrators may hesitate to admit it, it is often necessary to relinquish some control and delegate responsibility, especially in multiadministrator environments. Fortunately, you can easily delegate administrative duties on your Linux systems without giving out the root password. Just use Sudo.

Linux : Articles : A Death, a Re-birth and Silence: Troubleshooting Sound Cards under GNU/Linux
Posted: ( Sat 16th Feb 2002 10:44:21[AM] UTC )
It happens to everyone eventually. You walk into the office, turn on the desktop PC and you\'re greeted with ugly beeping and no video. The slightly acrid tang of electrical smoke reaches your nostrils and you know that before you\'ve even begun your day, it\'s already over. You say a small prayer to the computing gods that it\'s not the hard drive that\'s fried and you turn everything off before you begin unplugging peripherals.

Linux : Articles : Running a website on Linux, part II
Posted: ( Sat 16th Feb 2002 10:44:21[AM] UTC )
The Linux world offers the best tools for hosting a secure, stable, efficient website. Apache on Linux = low cost, great performance, and few headaches.

Posted: ( Sat 16th Feb 2002 10:44:21[AM] UTC )
As the Zaurus platform is Open Source and requires components from multiple sources to create a working developer environment, we\'ve created this \"cheat sheet\" to help you get going quickly.

Linux : Articles : Embedded Development with Qt/Embedded
Posted: ( Sat 16th Feb 2002 10:44:21[AM] UTC )
In this article, we look at how you develop Linux-based applications for handheld devices using the Trolltech\\\'s C++ GUI Qt/Embedded toolkit, available for embedded devices under both the GPL and commercial licenses for UNIX/X11 and Linux.

Linux : Articles : Filtering Mail with Procmail
Posted: ( Thu 14th Feb 2002 10:26:28[AM] UTC )
This month, I\'m going to look at filtering mail with Procmail. There are many reasons to filter your mail. For example, I subscribe to several mailing lists and get email from several different accounts; some of that mail is fairly important and some isn\'t urgent at all. And, of course, there\'s the ever-continuing battle against spam.

Linux : Articles : XP and Linux Go Head to Head on Two HP OmniBook 6000s
Posted: ( Wed 13th Feb 2002 07:18:45[AM] UTC )
While releasing Windows NT 4.0, Redmond\'s Hexenmeisters were already dreaming of code convergence with Win9x. But such black magic often goes beyond what apprentice sorcerers can handle.

Linux : Articles : ELJonline: Qt Palmtop
Posted: ( Fri 8th Feb 2002 01:43:18[PM] UTC )
Qt Palmtop, the new application suite from Trolltech for embedded systems, has been available for some time under the GPL license. It is now in its final stages of development and will be released as Qt Palmtop 2.0. The new version of Qt Palmtop will be dual-licensed to support both open-source and commercial interests.

Linux : Articles : .comment: A Winding Path to KDE3

It began with eyecandy. I like eyecandy. In that category, there is nothing better in Linux than Jamie Zawinski\'s XScreenSaver, and there has never been a better version of XScreenSaver than the newish 4.0. Within 4.0, there are no screensaver modules more visually pleasing than the GLX ones -- the 3-D, OpenGL modules -- as long as you have hardware support.

Linux : Articles : OS Wars: Microsoft vs Open Source
Posted: ( Wed 6th Feb 2002 06:46:04[AM] UTC )
Can one operating system fit all your needs? Or is it a matter of mixing and matching to the tasks at hand?

Linux : Articles : A Forest of Kernel Trees
Posted: ( Tue 5th Feb 2002 01:37:00[PM] UTC )
Lately, it seems, respectable kernel hackers have started maintaining their own kernel trees. In fact Linus Torvalds himself hinted twice in the Linux kernel mailing list that he supports the notion of many different trees and that to him a Linux kernel fork is not a threat but a sign of vitality and creativity within the community.

Linux : Articles : Secretaries use Linux, taxpayers save millions
Posted: ( Tue 14th Aug 2001 12:57:46[AM] UTC )
"Walk into the Largo, Florida, city hall and look at the two computer screens behind the reception desk. Instead of the typical Windows "Start" button in the lower left-hand corner, they have a KDE "Gear" logo, as do almost all of the 400-plus monitors on Largo employees' desks. Receptionists, administrative assistants, and division fire chiefs here all use Linux instead of Windows, and most of them don't really notice one way or the other. But the elected officials who are responsible for Largo's IT budget certainly know about and notice Linux, because using Linux instead of Windows is saving the city a lot of money," writes in Robin Miller.

Linux : Articles : Overview of the Linux+ Exam
Posted: ( Sun 15th Jul 2001 10:44:09[PM] UTC )
This summer, CompTIA will add another Linux certification to the fray -- that of Linux+ (pronounced "Linux plus"). This is a one-exam certification -- good for life -- on vendor-neutral topics similar to the other two certifications. Beta testing began June 22nd and will continue for one month. The live exam is scheduled to appear by September.

Linux : Articles : Free Software: Nothing is more appropriate for India
Posted: ( Sun 15th Jul 2001 06:40:29[PM] UTC )
It is clearly time for India to join the Free Software movement. Urged by this firm belief and commitment, a group of Free Software practitioners and enthusiasts in India have been successful in persuading Richard Stallman to establish an Indian Chapter of FSF. The Free Software Foundation of India (FSF-I) will be inaugurated by Stallman on July 20 in Trivandrum at the Freedom First! conference. This article goes into some friendly detail about the history of Unix, the GNU project, and Linux.
