Posted: ( Wed 28th Feb 2001 08:24:10[PM] UTC )
Now the Internet -- and virtual private networks (VPNs) that exploit its ubiquity -- give companies like Infocrossing a new way to bring their services to customers. At the same time, ASPs are creating new opportunities for mainframe systems, especially now that Linux is a reality at the high end.

Posted: ( Tue 27th Feb 2001 06:24:04[PM] UTC )
A satirical take on the future, based on recent Microsoft FUD. Brings up some interesting ideas on the future of Open Source, as well.

Linux : Articles : Can Linux cross the channel?
Posted: ( Tue 27th Feb 2001 06:15:54[PM] UTC )
"Who's looking after the needs of small to medium-sized businesses? Folks seem to forget that this is how Unix got its foothold in the days when VAX/VMS was king, maturing within the small and mid-sized business market while preparing to take on the enterprise."

Linux : Articles : Seeing Linux without sight
Posted: ( Tue 27th Feb 2001 06:09:32[PM] UTC )
"Since 7.0, though, SuSE has been packaging its own BLinux daemon which immediately looks for a Braille display on booting the installation CD. If such a device is found, the Yast2 installation tool switches to text-mode and the the screen reader is started."

Linux : Articles : KDE 2.1: A desktop aimed at grownups
Posted: ( Mon 26th Feb 2001 06:33:49[PM] UTC )
"There is little about KDE 2.1 that will instantly strike existing users as tremendously different, because many of the changes are under the hood. Instead of an instant "wow!," users are more likely to notice more subtle changes."

Linux : Articles : Surfing kernel code
Posted: ( Mon 26th Feb 2001 06:08:15[PM] UTC )
Even though everyone knows the Linux kernel is "free software", and that the source is open, most beginner and even mid-level Linux users usually don't take time to read the source. This article will give a couple tips and interesting high points to check out, as well as give you a small taste of the wealth of information embedded in the kernel, even if you aren't a C or ASM programmer.

Linux : Articles : Getting the most from your system : The LDP
Posted: ( Sun 25th Feb 2001 06:24:16[PM] UTC )
Since 1992 an organization called the Linux Documentation Project (LDP) has worked to develop free, high-quality documentation for Linux. It is set up much the same way as the Linux development team. Volunteers from across the Internet work together. The LDP develops three types of documents: Guides, HOWTOs, and FAQs.

Linux : Articles : Media coverage of 2.4 kernel: Generally fair
Posted: ( Sat 24th Feb 2001 12:17:21[AM] UTC )
"Generally, as you might expect, the Linux media has given the new kernel positive reviews, plus a plethora of articles on how to do something or another with 2.4. The more general technology press has been more skeptical about what this all means; all in all, a fair critique of 2.4, despite some misunderstandings of how Open Source products are released."

Linux : Articles : Don't Trip on the Red Carpet, evolve with GNOME CVS
Posted: ( Fri 23rd Feb 2001 05:26:48[AM] UTC )
"Last Saturday, GNOME 1.4's first beta release came out. Ximian had it packaged and ready to go in remarkably short time. A few days later, Ximian was at it again, rolling out Red Carpet 0.9, which we'll look at further along in this column."

Linux : Articles : Why Linux is giving Microsoft a migraine
Posted: ( Fri 23rd Feb 2001 05:22:07[AM] UTC )
"Probably the next big upgrade cycle will be centered around the Itanium," says VA Linux CEO Larry Augustin, whose company provides Linux hardware and services to large enterprises. "When computers start rolling off production lines, Linux will be on equal footing with everyone else, including Microsoft, in terms of taking advantage of the new hardware."

Linux : Articles : Contributor Ts'o's practical approach to Linux
Posted: ( Thu 22nd Feb 2001 07:40:59[AM] UTC )
Thirty-three year old Theodore Ts'o remembers when the Linux kernel was small enough to print out and read cover to cover, when "it was about an inch thick." That was around 1991, when he first joined the then scanty ranks of kernel hackers.

Posted: ( Tue 20th Feb 2001 10:36:49[PM] UTC )

Posted: ( Sun 18th Feb 2001 07:03:46[PM] UTC )
Waiting for a fsck to complete on a server system can tax your patience more than it should. Fortunately, a new breed of filesystem is coming to your Linux machine soon. One of the most-anticipated of recent Linux developments is the availability of journaling filesystems.
