Linux : Reviews : Wireless nirvana in a PC card

Using already available, 902-928MHz license-free radio frequency spectrum via something called the Ricochet MicroCellular Data Network), Metricom has created two, 1-watt Spread Spectrum, Frequency Hopping wireless modems that claim speeds of 128 kpbs and up.They are both designed for use with Windows, Mac OS, and they can also do Linux.

Linux : Reviews : Samsung SyncMaster 150MP LCD Monitor
Posted: ( Tue 2nd Jan 2001 11:50:24[PM] UTC )
"Would I recommend this monitor to others? Perhaps. There is almost an aura about the desk with this silver monitor placed atop. It is hard to look at the thin profile and not double take, and after lugging my bulky 19-inch monitor up and down flights of stairs, there is no doubt if I could afford an LCD monitor I'd get one."

Linux : Reviews : Q stands for QVWM and quality sarcasm
Posted: ( Tue 2nd Jan 2001 07:33:32[AM] UTC )
"The developers intended this window manager to bridge the gap for Windows users to use X, and for diehard X users to get used to Windows. Still, the first idea is not a bad one, and if you have to mimic Windows, you might as well do it right."

Linux : Reviews : Red Hat 7.0 as a server OS
Posted: ( Tue 2nd Jan 2001 07:20:09[AM] UTC )
"My recommendation is that if you don't do any development on your server, you are safe to go with Red Hat 7.0, applying the changes I detailed above. If you need to do development, wait for 7.1 and use 6.2 instead."

Linux : Reviews : SuSE 7.0 Professional: Experiences during installation
Posted: ( Sun 31st Dec 2000 09:17:07[PM] UTC )
"We purchased SuSE 7.0 Professional from a local store. We've installed this version hundreds of times on many different types of PCs. In our opinion, SuSE 7.0 is the best solution for new users first being introduced to Linux."

Linux : Reviews : Linux-Mandrake 7.2 complete
Posted: ( Sun 31st Dec 2000 09:12:28[PM] UTC )
"Our recommendation is for experienced users to be patient for the next release of Linux-Mandrake. If you are using LM 7.1, then we suggest that you stay with it. We can recommend that if you are using a different distribution and want to change because of the inclusion of KDE2 then you should not hesitate."

Linux : Reviews : The Process of Network Security: Designing and Managing a Safe Network
Posted: ( Sun 31st Dec 2000 02:51:01[AM] UTC )
"This book is one of the better ones. I like how the author kept the focus of the book on the process and not only on the technical information. It was a nice, compact read with a lot of information that anyone at any level could use to better secure their network."

Linux : Reviews : Linux's minuses outweigh pluses in 14-Day trial
Posted: ( Thu 28th Dec 2000 11:51:46[PM] UTC )
"In a quest to end my dependence on Microsoft, I embarked on a 14-day experiment. I tossed all my Microsoft programs and made Linux my primary operating system."

Linux : Reviews : Abit KT7-RAID Socket A motherboard
Posted: ( Thu 28th Dec 2000 11:39:54[PM] UTC )
"This board packs a killer punch, and there is no question it is one of the top boards for Socket A processors. In the past, Abit has been quite innovative with its products, and the KT7-RAID continues this tradition. Lets see how this baby shapes up under Linux."

Linux : Reviews : Instant messaging on GNU/Linux, part 1: AIM

This article series looks at some of the IM clients available for GNU/Linux and also rates them. In Part 1 of this series, the AOL IM service and the Linux clients available are reviewed.

Linux : Reviews : Changing lightbulbs the Whistler, Win98 and Linux way
Posted: ( Thu 28th Dec 2000 11:35:58[PM] UTC )
"Red Hat 7.0 seemed the logical Linux choice because of availability and USB and 810E support, but I ran into a number of issues that made it look like it was more trouble than it was worth."

Linux : Reviews : Best Linux 2000 R3
Posted: ( Thu 28th Dec 2000 12:09:46[AM] UTC )
"Best Linux has moved to international circles by providing a distribution that supports several languages. While the addition of these languages to Linux is important, one must ask, what else has Best Linux done to differentiate itself from other distributions, specifically Red Hat?"

Linux : Reviews : Giving voice to Linux with ViaVoice
Posted: ( Tue 26th Dec 2000 06:44:10[PM] UTC )
"I find ViaVoice for Linux to be useful. A substantial portion of this aricle was dictated into ViaVoice, and for the most part only minor corrections were needed. There are still problems and bugs, and speech recognition in general is still a developing science."

Linux : Reviews : Empeg car MP3 player and software
Posted: ( Tue 26th Dec 2000 06:39:46[PM] UTC )
"The reason I'm mentioning this piece of hardware here on Linux.com is simply because the player itself runs on Linux. Is this player for you? Do you have tons of money to waste? Seriously, I have doubts that I made the right choice."

Linux : Reviews : InstallShield: A work in progress
Posted: ( Mon 25th Dec 2000 05:25:52[PM] UTC )
InstallShield is the application of choice for most Windows software vendors to create the "setup.exe" program, which in turn is used to install other applications. Thanks to the wizardry of Java, InstallShield is now available for some Linux and Unix platforms, as well as for its origin, Windows.
